It was a blazing but sunny Saturday afternoon, when I decided to drive to the grocery store. Before heading out to the store something came across my mind. It was the fact that I need to write my next blog post. I have been putting it off for a couple of days now, but tomorrow is the due date and I need to start it. As I was driving, I couldn’t figure out how to start it or what to write about. I thought to myself, what would Anne Lamott, Mary Karr and Don Murray write about? Then as I pulled up to the grocery store, I noticed the library right next door had a line of people waiting outside of it. I walked up to a man dress with a gray shirt and blue jeans on. I ask him what everyone was there for. He informed me that 3 great writers will be here for a question and answer book signing today. I then ask him who was the 3 great writers. He said Mary Karr, Don Murray and Anne Lamott. I said wow are you serious! Then that’s when I thought to myself, this is a great opportunity to ask them about their own writing process and how it can help me with mine. So, I began standing in line right behind the man with the gray shirt on. While waiting in line, I began thinking like how I’m going to approach them about what I want to write. Do I tell them I’m not a good writer? I write like I talk and that’s not good! Then I thought, I’ll just get out of line and don’t waste their time. But, then I said wait they will help me become a better writer. As I got closer and closer to the top of the line, I felt ready to ask my questions. Little did I know I was approaching Mary Karr’s table first. I reach the table were she was sitting and I froze. I couldn’t believe I was about to talk to Mary Karr about writing. I became nervous and didn’t know what to say. She then said hello how are you? That made me feel much better. I said hello, I’m find, thanks for asking. I then told her I’m trying to write a blog post on the process of writing but don’t know where to begin. She then told me that “Every writer I know who’s worth a damn spend more time “losing than “winning” if success means trying a polish page that lands in prints as is." So, I ask her what did she meant by that? She explain to me just write and everything will fall together. She also told me that “Since I was always interested in how to be a writer, I also gobbled up literary biographies—Walter Jackson Bate on Keats and Coleridge; Enid Starkie on Baudelaire and Rimbaud; Diane Middlebrook on Anne Sexton; Ian Hamilton on Robert Lowell; Paul Mariani on William Carlos Williams”. “Getting a sense of the person’s time in history often helped me to understand their styles in that context—what literary pressures and fashions and values of the day were forging their pages." So, I took that as her saying to me that I should start reading biographies and that will help me with writing. I then went on to the next table were Anne Lamott was sitting. I first notice how beautiful she was and the way she spoke was amazing. She was telling the person in front of me that one of her favorite quotes that she would tell her student was “The very first thing I tell my new students on the first day of a workshop is that good writing is about telling the truth. She also told him that “Start with your childhood, I tell them. Plug your nose and jump in and write down all your memories as truthfully as you can”. “Don’t worry about doing it well yet, though. Just start getting it down." I felt as though I didn’t need to speak to her now because everything she told the person in front of me I understood. I felt as though that now I have some what of a clear understanding about the process of writing. But, I still want to talk to Don Murray to get his understanding of writing as well. As I’m walking over to his table I notice it was completely empty. I walk right up to him and said how do you do sir. He stated to me I fine, how can I help you? I told him I was in the process of writing my new blog for my English 100 class and I need some help on where to begin. I also shared with him the advice I got from Anne Lamott and Mary Karr. He told me that “The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: prewriting, writing, and rewriting”. “Prewriting is everything that takes place before the first draft." “Writing is the act of producing a first draft. It is the fastest part of the process, and the most frightening, for it is a commitment." “Rewriting is reconsideration of subject, form, and audience. It is researching, rethinking, redesigning, rewriting—and finally, line by-line editing, the demanding, satisfying process of making each word right." All the information I receive today made me want to rush home and write my blog post. I was so happy with what they told me about writing. I am no longer afraid of writing nor am I having a hard time with writing this blog. “I will be one great writer." “I will learn to write my ideas down and put them into action." “The more I write the more successful I will become."
