It was a beautiful sunny but hot day in July. The flowers were blooming and beautiful. My mom had just came back from a partner of her ‘s daughter funeral. My sister Shamika and I was sitting at the kitchen table in our 3-bedroom apartment eating cereal “My sister Shamika asked my mom, how was the funeral today.” “My mom said sad, I don’t know what I would do if I ever lost one of my kids.” “I went on to say, hey guys can we change the subjects.” “I don’t want to talk about funerals it makes me sad and depress.” “My mom said that’s fine. Let’s talk about something else.” My mom went on to ask my sister was she pack and ready to go for her weekend trip. The ride going down there was smooth my sister said. She said they did a couple of stops until they out there. She said they had so much fun. My family could not wait until they came back, so that we can meet our other cousins. When Sunday morning came about they were on their way back to Philadelphia when something went wrong. It was around about 5:55 am when the accident happen. The accident took place in Delaware not to far from home. My cousin dad fell asleep at the wheel hit a tree causing minor damage to the front of the van. Everyone in the van was okay because they were wearing their seatbelts. They only had minor cuts and bruises. We were so nervous as hell and scared. My family didn’t know what had happen but we were happy that everyone came out alive. “I cried and cried.” “I said than you Lord that my family is okay.” “My mom said baby girl you don’t have to keep thanking God, he already heard us.” “I said I know mom but I want to thank him a hundred more times.”

It was a blazing but sunny Saturday afternoon, when I decided to drive to the grocery store. Before heading out to the store something came across my mind. It was the fact that I need to write my next blog post. I have been putting it off for a couple of days now, but tomorrow is the due date and I need to start it. As I was driving, I couldn’t figure out how to start it or what to write about. I thought to myself, what would Anne Lamott, Mary Karr and Don Murray write about? Then as I pulled up to the grocery store, I noticed the library right next door had a line of people waiting outside of it. I walked up to a man dress with a gray shirt and blue jeans on. I ask him what everyone was there for. He informed me that 3 great writers will be here for a question and answer book signing today. I then ask him who was the 3 great writers. He said Mary Karr, Don Murray and Anne Lamott. I said wow are you serious! Then that’s when I thought to myself, this is a great opportunity to ask them about their own writing process and how it can help me with mine. So, I began standing in line right behind the man with the gray shirt on. While waiting in line, I began thinking like how I’m going to approach them about what I want to write. Do I tell them I’m not a good writer? I write like I talk and that’s not good! Then I thought, I’ll just get out of line and don’t waste their time. But, then I said wait they will help me become a better writer. As I got closer and closer to the top of the line, I felt ready to ask my questions. Little did I know I was approaching Mary Karr’s table first. I reach the table were she was sitting and I froze. I couldn’t believe I was about to talk to Mary Karr about writing. I became nervous and didn’t know what to say. She then said hello how are you? That made me feel much better. I said hello, I’m find, thanks for asking. I then told her I’m trying to write a blog post on the process of writing but don’t know where to begin. She then told me that “Every writer I know who’s worth a damn spend more time “losing than “winning” if success means trying a polish page that lands in prints as is." So, I ask her what did she meant by that? She explain to me just write and everything will fall together. She also told me that “Since I was always interested in how to be a writer, I also gobbled up literary biographies—Walter Jackson Bate on Keats and Coleridge; Enid Starkie on Baudelaire and Rimbaud; Diane Middlebrook on Anne Sexton; Ian Hamilton on Robert Lowell; Paul Mariani on William Carlos Williams”. “Getting a sense of the person’s time in history often helped me to understand their styles in that context—what literary pressures and fashions and values of the day were forging their pages." So, I took that as her saying to me that I should start reading biographies and that will help me with writing. I then went on to the next table were Anne Lamott was sitting. I first notice how beautiful she was and the way she spoke was amazing. She was telling the person in front of me that one of her favorite quotes that she would tell her student was “The very first thing I tell my new students on the first day of a workshop is that good writing is about telling the truth. She also told him that “Start with your childhood, I tell them. Plug your nose and jump in and write down all your memories as truthfully as you can”. “Don’t worry about doing it well yet, though. Just start getting it down." I felt as though I didn’t need to speak to her now because everything she told the person in front of me I understood. I felt as though that now I have some what of a clear understanding about the process of writing. But, I still want to talk to Don Murray to get his understanding of writing as well. As I’m walking over to his table I notice it was completely empty. I walk right up to him and said how do you do sir. He stated to me I fine, how can I help you? I told him I was in the process of writing my new blog for my English 100 class and I need some help on where to begin. I also shared with him the advice I got from Anne Lamott and Mary Karr. He told me that “The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: prewriting, writing, and rewriting”. “Prewriting is everything that takes place before the first draft." “Writing is the act of producing a first draft. It is the fastest part of the process, and the most frightening, for it is a commitment." “Rewriting is reconsideration of subject, form, and audience. It is researching, rethinking, redesigning, rewriting—and finally, line by-line editing, the demanding, satisfying process of making each word right." All the information I receive today made me want to rush home and write my blog post. I was so happy with what they told me about writing. I am no longer afraid of writing nor am I having a hard time with writing this blog. “I will be one great writer." “I will learn to write my ideas down and put them into action." “The more I write the more successful I will become."
In this particular blog post, I had the pleasure of reading A Fable for the Living by Kevin Brockmeier. This story was an amazing story about a person life. I loved the story from being to end even though I didn't want it to end. This story was about a widow women who would write letters to her author self knowing that one day they still will not be answered. So, when I decide to write to my author self I took the knowledge she gave me to write my own short story to my dear author self. My short story is in titled Dear Scary Writer. This short story basically talks about how I am as a writer and where I see myself headed in the near future with writing. I I hope you enjoy this blog. Dear Scary Writer, Hey, how are you feeling today knowing your about to enter an awesome new class? Did you wake up in a good mood, ready to write? Did you think about the new English class you will be taking in the spring semester? I know it’s must be kind of scary since you say you don’t know how to write, and you write like you talk. I also know you tried your hardest to run away from it. There had to been times when you say to yourself, I am just going to drop out when the first week is over. Maybe I’ll drop out the first day after class is over or not take the class at all. Remember, English class is fun once you get the hang of it. Hey, learn to explore writing in different ways and you will love it. I understand when you took English 050 three semester ago, you wasn’t quite there as a writer, but this class is different. You must have the vision, tools and understanding that you will do well. Try not to be a procrastinator and do the work when the deadline comes about. That only makes you hate writing more. You should always try to give yourself enough time to give writing your all. A good paper deserve 100% of your time, dedication and effort. Let your mind be free and just write! It will all come together in the end. I know as writer we beat ourselves up multiple times thinking we are not doing our best when it comes to writing. But, we must try to look at it on a positive note to receive great results. Give yourself as much credit as you think you deserve when writing. Sometimes, it’s okay to say I got this, I know I am a good writer and this will be my best writing yet. That’s giving yourself encouragement that you can do it. We offend say to ourselves, do you know what it feels like when your trying to write and your mind goes completely blank? Shall I describe if for you? It feels like starting a car with no gas in the tank. It also feels like sitting at a stop sign waiting for the light to change. That’s how it feels when it comes to writing. You feel lost trying to find your way to write a good paper, maybe even a good book soon. But, we as writers must tell ourselves this, we will become a great writer. You will understanding the creative side that you have to writing. There will be no giving up or saying you can’t do it. You will have great success, and the knowledge knowing that you are one amazing, talent writer. Sincerely, Tiffany Hill |
